Kollu thuvaiyal or kollu thogaiyal is a variety of chutney prepared from Horsegram ( kollu paruppu) and serves as a side dish for Idli, dosa and hot rice. Dry roasted kollu or Horsegram is fried with few ingredients and ground into a coarse paste called Kollu thuvaiyal. This version of Kollu thogaiyal is.
To get started with this recipe, we have to prepare a few ingredients. You can cook kollu thuvaiyal (horsegram chutney) using 10 ingredients and 5 steps. Here is how you cook it.
The ingredients needed to make Kollu thuvaiyal (horsegram chutney):
- Take 1/2 cup Horse gram/kollu
- Get 1 cup Shallots/small onion
- Make ready 2 Garlic cloves
- Take 1 Tomato
- Take 2-3 Red chilies
- Get 1 tea spoon Urad dal
- Take 1 tea spoon Coriander seeds
- Take 1 tea spoon Pepper
- Get 3/4 tea spoon Jeera/cumin seeds
- Take leaves Curry
This kollu paruppu chutney reminded me of kadala chutney though the taste is not the same the texture is smooth like the peanut chutney and we loved it a lot. Kollu is one of the healthy legume. Kollu Chutney is a a good accompaniment to Idli / Dosa or other breakfast dishes. Kollu (Horse Gram) is combined with coconut, onion and roasted gram dal to make the healthy and tasty Kollu Chutney.
Steps to make Kollu thuvaiyal (horsegram chutney):
- Cook horse gram in a pressure cooker by adding little water. Cook for 2 to 3 whistles and keep aside till the pressure goes off.
- Meanwhile heat 2 tea spoons of cooking oil in a pan and add urad dal, coriander seeds, red chilli, pepper corns, cumin seeds and curry leaves one by one. Saute for a minute. Take it away from the pan and add to the mixie jar.
- In same pan, add a teaspoon of oil and fry small onions when it becomes transparent add chopped tomato and saute till it gets cooked. Add this mixture to the mixie jar.
- Add cooked horse gram as well to mixie jar and add required salt. grind it to a fine paste.
- Note: you can use remaining water from cooked horse gram to make a kollu rasam
Dry roast horsegram till it is light golden. Remove that to a bowl and wash the well. That is one recipe I like with horsegram, have tried couple of others. Your pictures also help us understand how it should look at each step. Here, horsegram is combined with other delicious ingredients like coconut, red chillies, onions and coriander to make a mouth-watering chutney, which is perfect to serve with idlis and dosas.
