This payasam is my childhood favorite recipe, all the way from Rayalseema!! It is made on special occasions.

The ingredients needed to make Channa dal(Bengal gram) payasam:
  1. Prepare 1 cup Bengal gram channa dal / -
  2. Take 1 ½ cups Jaggery (powdered)-
  3. Make ready 1 ½ cups Coconut ilk -
  4. Make ready 1/2 cup coconut milk Concentrated -
  5. Make ready 10 nos Cashewnuts -
  6. Take 10 nos Raisins -
  7. Prepare 3 tbsps Grated cococnut -(for garnishining)
  8. Make ready 1 tsp Cardamom powder -
  9. Make ready 3 tbsps Ghee -
  10. Get 1/4 cup Milk • - (optional)

Technically, chana dal (or Bengal gram dal) is, to use the Latin, Cicer arietinum. Chana Dal Payasam / kheer is yet another exotic payasam recipe, that tastes delicious & unique.! It is commonly prepared in South Indian households during poojas The star ingredient of this payasam is bengal gram dal. We know bengal gram is very high in protein & very low in glyceminc index.

Steps to make Channa dal(Bengal gram) payasam:
  1. Heat a teaspoon of oil in pan. Soak the dal for about 30 minutes or
  2. Add and fry the channa dal for 2 - 3 minutes or till aromatic. Pressure cook channa dal for 3 whistles with very less water. Dal should not be mushy.
  3. Slightly smash it and keep aside. Slightly Fry the grated coconut in ghee separately. Keep aside. (Do not make it brown.)
  4. Keep 1 tsp of cooked channa dal aside and grind the remaining channa dal along with few cashew nuts (optional) to a slightly coarse paste.
  5. Combine the jaggery and 1/4 cup of water in a vessel and heat until the jaggery dissolves completely. Once jaggery syrup is ready.Strain and use for the further preparation for its impurities.Heat ghee ina vessel and add the cooked channa to the ghee and cook for some time.;Cook till the water content evaporates.
  6. Pour the jaggery syrup to the grounded channa paste.Stir continuously and check the flame to be low –medium. By checking constantly, we can avoid burning of channa dal.Now add the thin coconut milk and mix well. Cook for 5 minutes in medium flame. Add cardamom powder and now pour the thick coconut milk and reduce the flame to low for another 5 minutes and switch it off.
  7. Mix well so that there are no lumps. Switch off the flame.
  8. In another pan just heat the ghee, add cashews and sauté well till it’s almost light brown in color. And add the raisins for a minute and pour into the kadala pradhaman.
  9. Delicious, simple, quick, easy payasam/Kheer is ready in no time.
