Though i know the ingredients used in making pavakkai pitlai, i don't the right proportion. Bittergourd - definitely not well liked by most children and even adults. I am also not a great fan of this vegetable. I learnt this bitter gourd pitlai ( Pavakkai pitlai in Tamil) from my MIL.
Steps to make Pavaka Pitla:
- Cook the Toor Dal and Bitter Gourd in a cooker (alternatively you can also fry the bitter gourd in a pan by adding little Turmeric Powder and salt) and set aside
- In a pan add a small spoon of oil and one by by add the ingredients to grind. Remember to add the coconut at last. Once the are roasted cool them and grind to a smooth paste.
- For the final step, add the boiled/fried Bitter gourd in a pan along with Tamarind extract and bring it to boil add the ground paste later. Once it all comes to a boil add some salt based on your requirement and let it boil for 5 min. In a Kadai add a little oil and tamper the ingredients under "For Tampering" and mix tit to the Pitla. You can also add a small piece of Jaggery to take the edge off the bitter flavor. Goes well with Rice.
